- No Smoking or Straws: Suction and smoke can dislodge the clot and delay healing.
- Cold Compress: Apply on and off in 15-minute intervals to manage swelling.
- Pain Control: Take medications exactly as directed; start before numbness wears off.
- Food & Drink: Choose soft, cool foods. Avoid hot liquids and alcohol.
- Oral Hygiene: Don’t brush the surgical site; you may gently brush other areas. Rinse with warm salt water after the first 24 hours.
24–72 Hours: Reduce Swelling and Stay Clean
- Rinses: Use warm salt water several times a day (½ teaspoon salt in a cup of warm water).
- Diet: Continue soft foods such as yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies (no straw).
- Activity: Take it easy—elevate your head when resting and avoid strenuous exercise.
- Hygiene: Resume gentle brushing, keeping the brush away from stitches.
One Week: Back to Routine
- Sutures: If non-resorbable sutures were placed, return for removal as scheduled.
- Diet: Gradually reintroduce normal foods as comfort allows.
- Check-In: If pain worsens after initial improvement, call—this can indicate dry socket.
